The nights are drawing in, the leaves are turning; autumn is here, bringing with it just one thing. New season slap, in richer, deeper, altogether lusher colours.
Nowhere is this more in evidence then in this season’s hottest beauty trend - the blackberry lip. I know trying a colour this vibrant can be intimidating, especially for those of us prone to using the same colours every day, but don’t be scared. This lipstick trend isn’t the insanely deep purple of ripe berries on prickly bushes. Think the colour your fingers go when you squish one – rich, winey red with a translucent sheen.
Flattering to all skin tones, blackberry crush is also the easiest look to get right, simply by wearing one of two ways:
1. As a rich, matte lipstick
Line lips with a berry liner (I like Laura Mercier in Plumberry, £17.50) and fill in with three coats of a rich, matte berry lipstick. Avon’s Ultra Colour Bold Lipstick in Power Plum, £7.50 and Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution in Glastonberry, £23.50 are utter perfection. Keep eyes nude with a slick of liquid liner gently flicked in the corner. Nineties polished glam at its best.
2. As a slick stain on lips and cheeks
You know that colour your mouth goes when you eat two berries for every one you pick? THAT is the look you want. It is seventies rock chick meets twenties flapper and you won’t regret giving it a go. Dab a translucent stain onto lips and apples of cheeks over a bb cream and finish with thick black liner, smudged to high heaven and as many coats of mascara as your eyes can handle.
